On the morning of April 21, at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), the Admissions - Career Orientation Day 2024: "Accompanying Your Child towards Choosing a University" took place with the participation of nearly 2,000 parents in Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring Provinces through in-person and online forms. This program was jointly organized by Tuoi Tre Newspaper, Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), UEH, with the companion of Vingroup.

Accompanying the orientation day were Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung - Senior Specialist of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), Prof.Dr. Nguyen Khac Quoc Bao - Deputy Director of University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City; Journalist Nguyen Hoang Nguyen - Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi Tre Newspaper.

Speaking at the opening of the program, Prof.Dr. Nguyen Khac Quoc Bao - Deputy Director of University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) - remarked: "Recently, parents have become more and more interested in their children's education, accompanying them in their decisions of career, school, and exams. Choosing a university and specialization must be the optimal decision. To make the optimal decision, parents and students must solve a system of multivariable equations with many unknowns and constraints, from aptitudes, qualities, interests, family circumstances, development orientation, and economic and financial capacity, especially the rapid change and development of the domestic and international labor market and with many uncertain steps. Finally, should the university or institute that parents and children intend to choose be the most prestigious, with strengths, advantages, and the best conditions in the field? I believe that attending this event this morning will help parents and students meet what I have just said. You will have all the information, basis, and understandings necessary to choose a school and a career. Do not do it for your child or impose your wishes on them; rather, understanding their personalities and the family circumstances so as to help them make the accurate and correct decisions."

To help parents have complete information to prepare for the high school graduation exam and university and college admission in 2024, Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung - representative of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) - presented a general introduction to the admission season in 2024 with the latest and basic information for parents.

Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung - Senior Specialist of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) - asserted: "The Ministry has directed high schools to review information on priority candidates to avoid the situation where students have already been admitted but get rejected due to being classified into the wrong priority object. In addition, many universities currently consider high school transcripts; therefore, the Ministry of Education and Training stipulates that no later than May 31, 2024, all candidates will be granted accounts to register for admission. Parents need to remind their children to review their learning results to ensure their accuracy as the ministry provides them to universities. If there is any error, candidates need to immediately report it to the school for correction. From April 24 to 26, the Ministry of Education and Training will issue accounts to candidates who are 12^th-grade students. Candidates will use this account throughout the process of registering for the high school graduation exam and university admission. Candidates need to pay attention to the security of their accounts. Candidates register to take the exam from May 2 to 10 for dual purposes of high school graduation and university admission. On July 17, the Ministry will announce the results of the high school graduation exam. Regarding university admission this year, the adjustments are mainly to correct technical issues to ensure optimal admission. All admission registration processes are online. Candidates can register for many options, in which option 1 is the highest and can only be accepted into only one option. This year's admission registration period is reduced to 13 days (from July 18 to 30). From July 31 to August 6, candidates pay the registration fee by region within the prescribed time period. Therefore, candidates and parents need to pay attention to which area they are in to pay the admission registration fee on time. On August 19, schools announce official admission results. In addition to the admission project, candidates need to learn about the admission regulations announced. Candidates need to carefully learn about the supplementary criteria specified by the university they are about to opt for. Please note that the admission registration process is all done on the Ministry's system within the prescribed time frame. The system will automatically switch to another stage as the previous one is due, so it cannot be retaken. Candidates are required to complete the entire admission registration process on the online system."

During the program, various issues were excitingly discussed between parents and the advisory board, from how to choose a school and a major, to concerns regarding student psychology at this stage, along with admission information from early admission methods as well as those based on high school graduation results.

Prof.Dr. Nguyen Khac Quoc Bao - Deputy Director of University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), member of the Economic Advisory Board in economics, finance, applied technology in business and economics - supported the parents and students in troubleshooting the selection of the right major and career.

Addressing parents' questions regarding the admission method using the IELTS certificate, Prof.Dr. Nguyen Khac Quoc Bao suggested: “In 2024, UEH will stably maintain the 6 admission methods. Specifically, Method 1: Direct admission according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, Method 2: Admission of candidates who graduated from a foreign high school program and have an international baccalaureate; Method 3: Admission of excellent students; Method 4: Admission based on learning process by subject combination; Method 5: Admission based on the results of the Competence Assessment Test; Method 6: Admission based on the results of the High School Graduation Exam 2024. In the early admission Methods 2,3,4,5 UEH has opened the online admission registration portal from March 19, 2024. Regarding the IELTS certificate and other English proficiency certificates listed as TOEFL, many universities convert them to admission scores. However, this is not a mandatory requirement. At UEH, we rely on an IELTS score of 6.0 or a TOEFL iBT score of 73 or higher to calculate an admission score, called a conversion score. UEH admission score is based on four components: (1) GPA semesters or subject combinations, (2) The scores of International English proficiency certificates (3) Students from gifted/specialized schools (4) Excellent students winning prizes at city/provincial- and central-level tests. Those four components are converted into points and then added together called the admission score. Parents can directly access the website tuyensinhdaihoc.cixiu99.com under the Admissions Methods section to look for detailed information."

Later on, Prof.Dr. Nguyen Khac Quoc Bao answered parents' questions regarding the floor score for Method 5 that UEH just announced on April 19, 2024. He further shared: "UEH only uses the results of the Competence Assessment Test, phase 1/2024 of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City. The score threshold that UEH offers is the application threshold. It can be understood that this is the minimum score that a candidate needs to apply to UEH majors. This score threshold does not manifest the probability or opportunity for admission. In 2024, UEH reserves 10% of the program quota for admission based on the results of the Competence Assessment Test.”

Prof.Dr. Nguyen Khac Quoc Bao emphasized: "Supposed UEH has released the results of the early admission methods and announced that candidates are eligible to be admitted to the Digital Communication and Multimedia Design or International Business Law programs, this is just "the eligibility for admission", and they have yet to be admitted to UEH at all. To be admitted to UEH, candidates need to satisfy two additional conditions: (1) passing the High School Graduation Exam according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and, (2) registering their options to be admitted to the Digital Communication and Multimedia Design or International Business Law programs at UEH on the national admission portal in the highest priority order".

At the end of the consulting session with experts, Prof.Dr. Nguyen Khac Quoc Bao stayed on stage to provide dedicated advice on UEH admission information as well as share his experiences of choosing majors and careers for interested parents and students.

At the exhibition, UEH introduced to parents two free tools to help them understand their children’s inclinations, thereby choosing a suitable major and career:

(1) The "Understanding yourself" tool accompanies their children in the process of choosing a major, choosing a career, learning to improve professional skills and developing a career path. The tool is designed with 5 special features: (1) Test personality and habits; (2) Provide suitable career trends for each individual; (3) Provide information about famous people in the same group; (4) Suggest corresponding programs based on the list of majors prescribed by Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training ; (5) Suggest detailed study options for each level and training mode, from full-time, part-time, to postgraduate studies.

Currently, UEH has launched the “Understanding yourself” Zalo mini app version. Users can easily search and use it on the Zalo application.

As a Multidisciplinary and Sustainable University, UEH always prioritizes the responsibility of career orientation first, providing the young generation with a comprehensive and in-depth view of careers, thereby helping them make suitable major choices.
