UEH organizing the International Conference on Applied Linguistics and Language Education (ICALLE 2022): “Reconnecting and Thriving in the New Normal”

On October 21st and 22nd, 2022, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), the School of Foreign Languages ​​(SFL) and the Institute of International Language ​​and Country Studies (ILACS), UEH organized the 2nd International Conference on Applied Linguistics and Language Education (ICALLE 2022) with the theme: "Reconnecting and thriving in new normal", with the participation of domestic and foreign experts. In two days, the conference was organized with 8 plenary sessions, 48 ​​face-to-face sessions and 24 online sessions sharing many issues related to the application of technology in language teaching; policies, perspectives and adaptability of lecturers and students in the new normal; development trends of language education and applied linguistics in the future.

 

Attending the conference, on the side of UEH, there were Prof. Dr. Su Dinh Thanh - President, MA. Vo Dinh Phuoc - Dean of School of Foreign Languages, MA. Bui My Ngoc - Vice Dean of School of Foreign Languages, MSc. Phan Nhu Minh - Director of the Institute of International Languages ​​and Country Studies (ILACS), MSc. Thai Thi Thu Giang - Director of ILACS. The 2nd International Conference on Applied Linguistics and Language Education (ICALLE 2022) was organized by UEH for the second time with the participation of prestigious educational institutions and universities listed as National University - Philippines (Philippines), Mahasarakham University (Thailand), Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand), and Humber College (Canada), with the publication support from the Journal of Asian Business and Economic Studies (JABES).

 

 

 

Overview of the conference

 

The conference received more than 120 research abstracts and 150 attendees from Vietnam and other countries listed as the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, China, India, New Zealand, Australia, the US and Canada. ICALLE 2022 was organized in a hybrid format combined with online and in-person forms with the aims of attracting and creating opportunities for scholars, researchers, lecturers, students and anyone interested in the field of applied linguistics and language education for connecting, exchange and sharing.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prof. Dr. Su Dinh Thanh - President of UEH - shared: “The international conference on Applied Linguistics and Language Education has become an annual academic event organized by the School of Foreign Languages, ILACS, which is expected to be a platform for researchers and educators to share cutting-edge research, best practices, teaching innovations, and real trends and challenges in the field of applied linguistics and language education. This is also an opportunity for Vietnamese and international researchers and educators to connect and share new knowledge in teaching and research and build a strong community of practice. This year, with the theme "Reconnecting and thriving in the new normal", the conference was organized in the combination format of online and offline (hybrid) that brought together nearly 200 experts and scholars from all over the world like Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, China, India, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. It's a great opportunity for all of us, especially after the pandemic. Therefore, on behalf of UEH, I would like to thank the guests, speakers, and scientists for your interest and participation in this conference.”

In two days, the conference held 8 plenary sessions, 48 ​​face-to-face sessions, and 24 online sessions focusing on topical topics related to the application of technology in language teaching; policies on language education; perspectives and adaptability of lecturers and learners in the new normal, and development trends of language education and applied linguistics ​​in the future, especially after the impact of the pandemic.

 

The ICALLE 2022 has the participation of leading education experts: Associate Professor Johnathan Newton, Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand) shared the enhancing the power of learning activities in language education which focuses on the task-based language teaching method and the PERMA model. Professor Averil Coxhead, Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand) discussed the importance of vocabulary in applied linguistics and language education. Professor Jessie Barrot, National University (Philippines) discussed the development of the new normal through flexible teaching activities. Assistant Professor Kevin Tai, the University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong) shared the using different languages ​​in teaching English. Associate Professor Tamas Kiss, Sunway University (Malaysia) discussed the reconstruction of language learning in the new normal. Associate Professor Lee Wah Kean, University of Nottingham (UK) shared his research findings on connecting and thriving in the new normal through learning communities. Professor Catherine Dune, Humber College (Canada) and Professor Gloria McPherson, Seneca College (Canada) introduced a model of a connected language classroom in 2022. Associate Professor Trinh Quoc Lap, Can Tho University (Vietnam) presented his research on trust as one of the decisive factors for learners’ intrinsic motivation.

The International Conference on Applied Linguistics ​​and Language Education 2022 was successfully held and will become an annual academic activity organized by UEH. With the potential to develop academic training and research, and many meaningful and practical academic activities, the Conference will facilitate and promote sustainable development in training, research and international cooperation of UEH.
