The English Zone at University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) was established with the sole goal of helping both employees and students at the university improve their English skills through a variety of activities, including language seminars, communication workshops, musical & cultural exchanges, etc., held entirely in English. It is expected to be one of the most productive responses to UEH’s internationalization efforts to elevate the university’s academic reputation and position as a higher-education institution at the national, regional, and global scale. UEH English Zone officially went into operation at the end of July 2021 and is currently conducting online activities to suit the context of the pandemic.
UEH English Zone often conducts weekly themed activities to help participants practice and enhance their foreign language reflexes, increase their lexical resources along with communication skills to form the habit of using English on the daily, which could help them easily adapt to a multicultural & multilingual environment anywhere, but especially starting right here at UEH.
Additionally, UEH English zone was designed to be a conducive international playground where attendees are given the opportunity to learn, discover and explore cultures from other countries. Both the regular and periodic activities at the Zone are organized in the most practical way, allowing both learners and officials the space to use English confidently and naturally while abiding by Vietnam’s culture, customs and traditions and still maintaining a sense of modernity and globalization.

During the 4th COVID resurgence, determined to turn challenges into opportunities, the UEH English Zone has been studiously deploying many online activities to keep students and employees of the university engaged and motivated throughout the trying times. Informative seminars are held periodically every month with many interesting topics, such as: Arousing the passion for learning English; Semantics Analytical Skills in IELTS/GMAT tests; Idioms in communication, etc. These events have managed to bring together many local and foreign reporters while creating a lively discussion forum amongst UEH students and employees, regardless of time and space. Despite lockdown and huge geographical gaps, the seminars and talk shows were also successful in connecting language enthusiasts across Vietnam and cross-regionally to European and American countries.
Namely, together with Sripatum University (Thailand), UEH has organized an online culture exchange program that has garnered positive feedback and attention from students. Through the program, students from both universities can better understand and appreciate one another’s cultures, during which it can further strengthen diplomatic relations and friendships beyond geographical borders for both officials and students.

For the month of October, the UEH English Zone will continue its mission to help UEH employees and students improve their English skills through a seminar, hosted jointly with the School of Foreign Languages, called “Mastering English Academic Writing Skill”. Joining the program is Dr. Deborah Laurs, Assistant Manager of the Student Learning Center at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. This will be a promisingly exciting event that will bring about a lot of useful information for participants, as well as opportunities to interact and discuss with a field expert on this interesting topic.
